NEBULA DISRUPTED

Game Programmer and AI Designer

This game became the part of our initial showcase at India Game Developer Conference, 2022. This was the first game to be showcased from our college at the event, where it gained much appreciation. It is a 2D side scroller game, where I handled the Enemy design and Programming.

PROJECT BREAKDOWN

Project Goals

The project's main goal was to create a 2D side scroller game that could cater to a wide audience. Since this was meant to be played at the India game developer conference, we had to keep the playtime below 20 minutes.

As a part of this project, my main goal was to keep the code simple, easy-to-understand and re-usable.

Primary Responsibilities

Development

  • Implement the enemy AI for the game.

  • Work with another developer to solve bugs and issues.

  • Implementing cutscenes and tutorial section for the level.

Other Responsibilities

  • Managing the timelines and the team.

  • Optimizing the 2D assets to boost performance.

Development

Less time, much work

For this project, we had a short deadline of 7 days to polish our games, so that we could submit it for review before showcasing at the event. The team had prior experience working on solo projects, but it was the first time we worked as a team. Due to the time constraints, we decided to pick existing elements from our older games and migrate them to this game.

  • I had to take the existing code and modify it to meet the needs for the game.

  • Since this was just for a prototype, I tried to experiment with the enemies to create some variations.

  • I also implemented level mechanics such as locked doors, lasers, etc. to make the game more fun.

After we successfully did the first playable build and got it approved, we began to polish the game in the next 14 days before the event.

  • I had to sort mechanics based on the severity of their bugs. If a bug was severe, then we had to get rid of it.

  • We decided to do small cinematics and story for the game. I had to sit with the artist and implement all the cutscenes in the game.

  • I also sat with my other developer to help him fix bugs in the player and suggest some changes to make the game more 'juicier'.
